It did take us a bit more time than we expected to propose some videos of Control in its Ultimate Edition and since the game is available on Playstation Plus, maybe some of you don't even need to see the next-gen version in action. As a reminder though, PS5 and Xbox Series X owners can choose between ray tracing and 60 fps, both modes running in 1440p. On Xbox Series S, resolution is limited to 900p but you still get 60 fps.

after an initial lukewarm impression of what is this strange beast AA?AAA? game, the way the game grows radically and shifts the tone to the X-files game within the x-files secret bureau that does justice to the whole "M.I.B." setting and doesn't come off as cliché/parody because of the vast lore work, and let you go winding as an unkown vessel to witness all this obscure phenomena and Gov control of it, it just hits the nail of "i needed this (game) and i didn't even knew i need it".

Both videos seem to be encoded with wrong black levels, at least on my end I'm getting massive black crush both with web player and in downloaded video files

It is not the encoder problem, Control itself is just funky with blacks. When I run the game, I for some reason see black crush in the title screen which I do not understand because I am actually playing it. I do not know if it is my VA panel or because my monitor is in HDR and Control does not offer the option. Now I recorded some gameplay using Nvidia shadowplay and then transferred the video to my phone which is in pristine uncompressed quality. On my Galaxy S9's OLED screen I was still getting the black crush. Now after I load into the game, the spot on the screen which crushed the black on the title screen was gone, but just playing the game with an RTX 2060 and using ultras settings with DLSS 2.0 and the full suite of ray-tracing, I still get horrible blacks. Now this game looks fantastic but in dark areas it looks terrible and this is in a scene without Volumetric Lighting of any kind and no kind of fog or particles. In the end I just think that Control has terrible black levels which I wished they would fix in a patch or maybe even add in HDR but it is still an amazing game.

Look we haven't changed anything in our usual capture/encoding process, so considering Blim is the only one who could possibly understand what the problem is and he doesn't return my emails these days, either it'll have to do or I'll simply stop losing my time making videos.

Btw, it's not against you, I am really sorry not everything is perfect when it comes to videos quality, but sometimes it's just discouraging to see that not everything is working as it should.

It's cool, just thought it was worth pointing out. It might be a console doing something funky with a video output, maybe a system update broke something, I remember this happening a couple of times with Xbox One last generation.

You might try setting RGB range to limited in PS5 video options, or disabling system level HDR.

Possibly, I'll try to look into it so it doesn't happen again, but my skills are limited I must confess. :)

I have already recorded one more God of War video with the same set-up. No sound issue this time but with the GoW video curse we have here, blacks will probably be crushed. Let me know if they are.

Looking at the previous GoW video it seems it has crushed blacks too, however GoW has raised black level by default, so it evens out somewhat.

So after talking about it with John from DF, it's a PS5 issue with the SDR output. Only reason the DF footage is brighter is that they try to compensate with the brightness settings. Will keep that in mind for next time. :)
